Mahidol University

Founded in 1888, Mahidol University stands as a cornerstone of Thailand’s educational and medical history, celebrating over 150 years of excellence. As the home of Thailand’s first hospital, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol has grown to encompass six campuses across Thailand, with its headquarters in the heart of Bangkok.

 

The university's academic diversity boasts 17 faculties, 6 colleges, and 8 institutes. Mahidol is a field for innovation, particularly through its Innovator Playgroups, where students are trained in entrepreneurship skills. Research at Mahidol is robust, spanning three key categories: Health Sciences, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. With 69 internationally accredited programs and a highly ranked College of Music, Mahidol meets global academic standards.

Sustainability Initiatives

Mahidol University is also dedicated to fostering global citizenship and student mobility, with initiatives like the SDGs + Mobility MaPs 2024 and the Sawasdee Thailand Summer Programme 2024. Despite a reduction in student mobility during COVID, Mahidol remains committed to these goals.

Additionally, Mahidol is pioneering sustainable energy solutions. The campus is powered not by oil or gas but by solar energy, with every building adorned with solar panels and a solar-powered lake showcasing their commitment to a greener future.

Living in Thailand:

  • Language: English is spoken in some tourist areas, it is not widely spoken throughout the country

  • Cost of living: Lower than in Singapore, a higher standard of living for your income. However, Bangkok faces inflationary pressures

  • Affordable housing: Options range from modern condominiums in Bangkok to beachfront villas in southern Thailand. Prices vary depending on location, size and amenities 

  • Transportation: Public transport is extensive and affordable, including BTS Skytrain, MRT Subway and buses

  • Infrastructure: Traffic congestion can be a major problem in Bangkok and other parts of the country can lack basic infrastructure such as reliable public transportation

Working in Thailand:

  • Hierarchy and respect: Thai workpalces are hierarchical, with emphasis on being respectful

  • High context culture: Thais often avoid saying "no" directly to save face

  • Decision-making: Decisions are typically made by senior management after consultation

  • Saving face: Public criticism or confrontation is considered disrespectful

    • Social purchase benefits with government sectors​

    • Any donations to Social Enterprise from corporates can reduce income tax
